Salutes our Homeless Veterans

Veterans commit their lives to serving, protecting and securing our nation. Sadly, one of the outcomes of prior military service results in an unsettling FACT: 12% of homeless individuals in the Washington DC area are our veterans. Service providers throughout the Greater Washington, DC area structure comprehensive programs to meet the needs of those who have returned home, those who bravely seek to start anew.

Veteran programs touch the lives of all Americans: they demonstrate the gifts of liberty and freedom alive in our communities. In support of our endeavor to serve these men, women, and families, Hilton Worldwide Corporate employees hosted a Day of Service to salute our veterans—a day of remembrance for those who proudly served our nation. Corporate volunteers signed on for shifts and assembled more than 500 Care Packages of essential goods, which KEYS delivered to veterans served by the following organizations who face the crisis of homelessness in our nation’s capitol:

  1. Access Housing, Inc. is on a mission to make sanitary, decent, secure and stable housing available to veterans. Like many other KEYS partners, it is “proudly serving those who served.”

  2. Through a comprehensive and self-directed recovery program, Pathways to Housing DC engages, houses, supports, and treats chronically homeless adults and facilitates their recovery and integration into our community.

  3. The Veterans First program at Friendship Place provides support services to veterans and their families as they make the transition out of homelessness or seek permanent housing.

These and many other DC area organizations provide essential services for homeless veterans and their families. In support of our veterans, KEYS safeguards vital resources and connects our resources to these organizations. We are committed to caring for the needs of homeless veterans and veteran families who are returning home.
